sorry it took so long; i still don't have a proper computer ><
...for staying away. but i need the break. it wouldn't be a stretch to say that last year was one of the worst years i've ever had, and it's not over yet.
i remembered about NYCC though, and managed to wade through my neighbourhood to find most of the reports. the one thing that is foremost in my mind is "thank god there was no way i could have gone." why? because i'm just not in the right headspace to deal with the insanity of Arashi fandom right now. and insanity it is. damn it, i don't want to be one of those people that says it was better when it wasn't as popular, but it seems to me that the crazy and the selfish have increased in the last year or so. not to mention the entitlement. OH GOD THE ENTITLEMENT. this is where i insert some rant about how people should expect to work hard for what they can get and be grateful for it.
i doubt i would have been cool and collected if i was seeing Sho in the flesh, but for god's sake, whatever happened to common sense and fangirls sticking together? wtf was up with the chikubi stuff and the crazy uchiwa girl? and finding out about how lady_gemma got her guaranteed tickets was interesting to say the least. not to mention the lead up where there was some bitching about actually going in the first place.
there are rules for a reason, and i'm glad that Sho stayed out of reach in the safety of his glass box (metaphorically as well?). i do not blame the security for doing that at all. you may not have started out pushing or shoving, but eventually it ended up that way. i think that should have been anticipated - not everyone is a gracious and well meaning person, especially if they are within grasp of something they want desperately. the fact that a very limited number of tickets to the premiere were given out must have been disappointing, but that is no excuse for poor behaviour. luckily the number of complaints about that from the fangirls are blissfully few; i doubt the same could be said for the fanboys.
one of the things i love the best about Sho is that he takes all aspects of his job seriously - like Jun. Sho, unlike Jun, doesn't always feel the need to be polite or gracious. blame that on his arrogance or his temper if you like, but i feel that he's justified in being annoyed that one of the first questions he was asked was one of entitlement and not on something that he worked hard on. also, we should respect the rules of JE. in Japan, he wouldn't have been offered a gift in a press conference or Q&A. so it's no surprise that he didn't know how to react appropriately to that. as for humility, doesn't the fact that he was shocked at the turnout speak for itself?
as for the organisation - there is very little awareness in American (Western) society about the popularity of idols and Johnnys. for Japanese entertainment, the focus is still very much on anime and manga, not 芸人 and タレント. the organisers had no idea Sho is so popular because the Arashi fandom is, by-and-large, not an English speaking one. all the online communities for Arashi are rather small compared to ones for American franchises, and we do have a concentration of majime fangirls online - ones that are serious about their fangirling. heck, i'll gladly admit i'm one of them. but i think the organisers would have been focused on, say, the Heroes or Watchmen or even the Torchwood events rather than the Yatterman ones. after all, those are the fandoms that do have some kind of exposure. i'd like to find some reports of those events and compare to them to Sho's appearance, just to see how much difference there is.
on the other hand, Sho doing the furitsuke to A.RA.SHI was very cute. and he looked good. but then, they always look good. the reviews of the movie have gotten me more excited about watching it - i do love a crazy campy movie. i'm not a pop culture snob; after all my biggest obsession is a boy band. and this girl got interviewed for NEWS ZERO (i'm pretty sure that's what it was for). lucky girl. she was fantastic and well behaved about it. karma? i think so.
i know that people are piling on the worst aspects of the event, and this is why we should behave ourselves in public. the bad parts get remembered by the general public, not the good. there's a reason why fangirls have a bad name. and you know what? i'm too serious a person to want to be associated with crazies.
here's a good starting point for reports if you're looking for them, but there's a lot around that's not on that list. like this behind the scenes report.
